Infographic depicting different types of Fraud and Scams to look out for during a pandemic

Here is a text version of the Infographic content. According to the FTC1, 436,000 instances of fraud related to COVID-19 were reported between January 2020 and April 7, 2021—with losses exceeding $399 million and counting. It is vital that you understand what the most common types of fraud being practiced look like and the steps you can take to protect yourself and your business.

THE MANY FACES OF COVID-19 FRAUD

Phishing Emails that appear to be from reputable sources but are actually sent by scammers.
Malicious Websites that offer resources related to COVID-19, but hide viruses or other malware.
Social Engineering Scams that ask you to send money or provide personal information.
ATM “Bust-Out” Schemes that use multiple stolen or fictitious cards to make continuous withdrawals.
Loan Scams that falsely require additional fees or a pre-paid debit card to finalize loan approval.
Supply Scams that offer essential items, such as vaccines and personal protective equipment, from an unknown website.
Illegal Robocalls that pitch in-demand services, like medical treatments, or claim to be from a government agency.
“Money-Mule” Schemes that use fraudulent work-from- home job offers to move illicit funds using unwitting parties.

PROTECT YOURSELF

Don’t Give Your Personal Information over phone, text, or email, as official business related to the COVID-19 crisis isn’t conducted that way.
Secure Your Accounts by updating passwords, operating and security systems, and enabling multi-factor authentication.
Report Suspicious Activity to the authorities, such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI)’s Internet Crime Complaint Center at ic3.gov, the FTC at ftc.gov, or local law enforcement.
Keep your guard up and know that if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Assume you’re dealing with a fraudster.
Only trust official information from secure sources like government (.gov) websites and local healthcare officials.
Never click unexpected links in email, text, or on the web that you don’t trust.
